"Our stop-start six mile descent from the Quad to Herne Hill velodrome could not have been in starker contrast to what followed. For two hours we darted around the historic circuit - whose interior hosted the displaced Crystal Palace FC during the Great War. A century on and UCL was engaged in its own warfare - albeit more light hearted - as fifteen cyclists trailblazed round the smooth surface.
Fixed gear bikes ensured the first laps were daunting and exhilarating in equal measure for some newcomers, but within minutes, the group had achieved a beautiful slip stream and was looping the track in competent fashion. Yet more pleasant weather made for a stunning night time ride back, the view of London’s skyline from an empty Waterloo Bridge itself reason enough to have joined the fine trip to Herne Hill"
