Hello and welcome to UCL’s cycling club! We are a friendly group of students who just love to ride our bikes. The club runs a lot of different activities for varying abilities and disciplines, including short social rides in and around London all the way through to tough, structured training rides for racing cyclists. Our racing members compete in both university led BUCS events including the hill climb, 10 mile, 25 mile and 3-up time trials while also representing UCL in British Cycling ranked regional races. So, whatever your experience or level, whether new to the sport or a seasoned rider, we should have something that appeals to you. Look out for us at freshers fayre or out on our bikes in our purple lycra.
Social Rides and Club Runs
We run fortnightly, social rides that are relaxed, friendly days going to places like Cambridge, Brighton and closer to home. These follow beautiful countryside routes and are a great opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of London. There will always be a club member leading with GPS routes available with your smartphone of GPS device. Rides usually end with a meal and then return via train ride back to London. These rides are for cyclists of all abilities, no matter what bike you ride or how fast you are you're always welcome on these rides!
Alternate weekends we run fortnightly club runs. These are the classic cycling club tradition of a long medium paced ride to get the base miles in, burn the fat off and increase endurance - and of course they include a cafe stop for coffee and a huge slice of cake! They will be ideal for cyclists aiming to race, or ride sportives. Clipless pedals and helmets mandatory for these rides!
There are three weekly training sessions. Club runs and Team training rides; one faster training ride on Wednesday afternoon to Regent's or Richmond Park and an early morning or evening chaingang session round Regent's Park. Some rides will be managed on an ad-hoc basis so there will always be an opportunity to ride with someone at any point of the week!
In addition to this, we will be running core + stability sessions with the option of group turbo-ing as well as a Team Training Camp! Join our Facebook group for more info.
In the summer of 2013 we enjoyed a scorching cycle tour to Pembrokeshire: 300 miles of great cycling via Oxford, Bristol, the Brecon Beacons and onto the coast. In 2014 we had a fantastic multi-day tour to the Isle of Wight and also a longer tour through to the south coast of Fance. This year there has been a touring ride to Amsterdam, as well as one to the French Alps in the last few years.
Once the days get longer we will run longer, audax-style rides and enter local audax events, aiming to qualify for Paris-Brest-Paris in 2015. Distances will be 50,100, 200, 300, 400, 600km. For those who don't know, audax (or randonneuring as it’s known on the continent) is basically cycling a very long way at a steady pace. It is not a race but is about staying on your bike for long periods, eating and drinking sensibly and pacing yourself. Audax events are extremely cheap to enter and usually very organised and well run. Think village halls, tea and cake. For more info click on the link below:
